How To Measure Curtains

Want to get the perfect fit for your custom curtains? This curtain measurement guide provides simple, step-by-step instructions for measuring window width and height to ensure your curtains look tailored and elegant. Whether you’re updating your living room or furnishing a new apartment, accurate curtain measurements are essential for a flawless finish.

What You’ll Need:

  • Steel measuring tape
  • Notepad or phone to record sizes
  • A step stool or ladder (if measuring tall windows)

Step 1: Measure the Width

  1. Measure the width of the window frame from one side to the other.
  2. Add 15–30 cm on each side to allow the curtains to overlap and block light.
  3. For a fuller look, multiply the final width by 1.5 to 2.5 depending on the desired curtain fullness.

Step 2: Measure the Height (Drop)

  1. Decide where your curtain rod will be placed – typically 10–15 cm above the window frame.
  2. Measure from the rod location to the desired drop (e.g., just below the window, floor-length, or puddle effect).
  3. For eyelet curtains, measure from the top of the rod.
  4. For tab-top or pencil pleat curtains, measure from the rod down.

Tips for Perfection

  • Always double-check your measurements.
  • Round up to the nearest cm.
  • Take measurements for each window individually – even if they look identical.
